"The Mist on the Moor"
The hike had been perfectly normal, a standard Sunday trek through the Yorkshire moors. Heather brushed against my jeans, and the sky was a monotonous grey. But as the afternoon faded, a thick, unnatural fog rolled in, silent and fast. I stopped, realizing the trail was gone. The air felt heavy, and the usual sound of wind was replaced by a low humming noise, vibrating in my chest. In the distance, between two ancient oak trees, a figure stood—not quite solid, more like smoke holding a human shape. It didn't speak, but I felt an overwhelming sense of loss, a sorrow that didn't belong to me. When I blinked, the figure was gone, and the fog lifted as fast as it had arrived, leaving me with nothing but the natural sound of a crow calling in the distance.
